John Eliphalet Smith (1878-1963) of Polk County, Or., was an instructor in geology at the University of North Carolina, 1912-1917, and during that period also did surveys and reports for the North Carolina Geological and Economic Survey and for Carolina and Northwestern railroad. He was educated in Oregon, Kansas, Iowa, Chicago, and Missouri.
